Dr. Alicia Power

Dr. Alicia Power grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. After completing her B.Sc. in kinesiology at Dalhousie University she moved out west to complete medical school at UBC and her Family Practice residency here in Victoria.  She and her husband fell in love with Victoria and have not looked back since.  She has spent time in Inuvik, Port Hardy and Tofino but always comes back home.  She has been Co-head of the Department of Family Practice Obstetrics.  She also has a keen interest in teaching our next generation of doctors and is active in teaching both medical students and Family Practice residents.

In her free time she likes spending time outdoors with her two young children, exercising, knitting and enjoying good food and wine with friends. 

Dr. Alicia Power is the co-founder of She Found Motherhood - supporting people on their journey from Pregnancy to Parenthood.

Dr. Jane McGregor

Dr. Jane McGregor was Dr. Power’s resident from 2015-2018 and it worked out so well they decided to keep a good thing going and start to practice share! Dr. McGregor is a Victoria local (lived here since age 10). She attended UVic for her undergraduate studies where she completed a Kinesiology degree while playing basketball for the Vikes. She then completed medical school in Vancouver at UBC before coming back to her beloved island for residency. She loves both family medicine and maternity care and really feels at home working in the collaborative environment at Grow Health.

Outside of medicine, Dr. McGregor enjoys getting outside with her family and dog. She has two young daughters born in 2016 and 2019 and loves to go on biking and hiking adventures with them and her husband.

Dr. Ally Downs comes from Kingston, Ontario and completed her B.Sc in Physiology at McGill University. She took some time to travel and then went on to study Medicine at McGill. She moved to Victoria in 2012 to complete her Family Medicine Residency and she loved it so much she decided to stay. Since graduating, she has worked as a locum in Victoria, the Interior and the Northwest Territories until she decided to join the Grow Team full time and set up a practice. She feels very fortunate she could join such a motivated, friendly, fun and caring team.
When she's not doctoring, she is spending time with her husband, son and Aussie Shepherd Sprocket. Often they can be found off climbing mountains, camping, hiking, biking or taking the dog for swims in the ocean. She also loves gardening and playing ultimate frisbee. Frisbee helps to hone her baby catching skills ;)

Dr. Ioana Smirnov was born in Romania, and moved to Canada with her parents as a young child. She studied Microbiology and then completed her medical degree at UBC. She and her husband have been official Islanders since 2011. They have spent time in Comox, Nanaimo, Duncan, and Saltspring Island before settling down in Victoria. They have a son born in 2015 and a daughter in 2018.

Dr. Smirnov is dedicated to the full spectrum of Family Practice and also has a special interest in maternity care. Outside of medicine she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and being active in the great outdoors.

Dr. Alison Bingham has a referral based Pediatrics practice at Grow Health.

Dr. Manthorne is a Newfoundlander born and bred.  She completed her medical degree and paediatric subspecialty training St. John's, (with stints in Halifax and Montréal), and moved to British Columbia in 2004, initially to the Okanagan Valley to complete a summer locum.  This turned into an 18 month stay, and before she knew it, British Columbia had become her home.  She feels very much at home in Victoria, close to the ocean, with the cool wind keeping the summers closer to the temperatures she’s used to.

In addition to Medicine, Dr. Manthorne pursues ongoing education through her Master Gardener training, is an at-home chef, loves music, enjoys photography and loves to run and spend time with her husband and step children. 

In addition to office practice she has a busy hospital practice, and teaches with the University of British Columbia and University of Victoria training the next generation of young physicians.

Dr Trottier-Boucher grew up in a french speaking family on the south shore of Montreal, Quebec. She completed her MD degree at Université de Montréal and her residency program in General Pediatrics at Hôpital Sainte-Justine, Montréal. She felt in love with the West Coast after giving a presentation at a medical conference in Vancouver in 2014 and tried to find an excuse to move there since ! She made the big jump in fall 2017 and moved to Victoria with her partner. They both got very quickly fond of the beauty of Vancouver Island. She was very happy to join Grow Health practice in the spring of 2018.

When not at work, she likes spending her time cooking, playing violin, cuddling her two big cats and being outside !

Dr. Zoya Thawer is a pediatric endocrinologist. She is originally from Vancouver and completed medical school at McMaster's Niagara Regional Campus, pediatrics residency at Queen's University and fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. In the last two years, she has completed pediatric endocrinology locum positions at the Alberta Children's and Stollery Children's Hospitals.

Dr. Thawer now works on the island as part of the West Coast Pediatric Endocrinology Group alongside Dr. McCutcheon and Dr. Stock. In addition to her clinics at Grow Health, she has a clinic at Victoria General Hospital and provides outreach to Nanaimo and Campbell River once a month. She also teaches with the University of British Columbia and University of Victoria training the next generation of young physicians.

When not working, Dr. Thawer enjoys doing ceramics, knitting, cooking/baking and running!
